I need to recharge. At least a day without going outside, seeing anyone, talking to anyone. I am starting to lose my mind.

Seven days before the release, here is your first look at “A Heart’s Desire”
From her very early years, Evelyn knew whom she wanted to be when she grew up. She was a child of a school principal father, who taught her responsibility and discipline, and a romance novelist mother, who instilled in her the desire for true love. Her books inspired Evelyn to dream of the world in colours as seen by those with love nestled in their souls.
By the age of fifteen, she had developed a clear idea of the manner in which she would like to meet her one and only. It will be the evening after a chilly torrential rain, Evelyn wrote in her diary. A sudden quickening pulse will break my reverie. I will run outside, following the thrill of anticipation. As I breathe in the petrichor, out of the corner of my eye, I will catch a glimpse of an enigmatic figure approaching me out of the twilight. From this single glance, my heart will melt like an ice-cream cone on a hot summer day, and then I will know he is the one. But that wasn’t enough. As much as Evelyn was enchanted by the concept of true love, she remained her father’s daughter. Planning ahead grew to be a part of her nature, and Evelyn resolved to learn the exact time and date of the meeting with the love of her life.
Fortunately, there was a place that could teach her the art of seeing into the future. It bore the name of the Intergalactic Institute of Excellence. Located on Prometheus, in the Scholarium system of the Andromeda galaxy, some 2.5 million light years away from Earth, the Institute was not only the most exquisite piece of architectural thought in the whole universe but also the ultimate destination for those who wished to learn a thing or two beyond the knowledge of earthlings. The IIE was an educational paradise for anyone who was lucky enough to get in.
Evelyn applied for the Starlit Reading course and subsequently became one of those lucky few, to the bitter disappointment of both her parents. They called Evelyn’s choice irresponsible, even her mother, who urged Evelyn to accept a place at the local college. Their words stung, and yet the pain was what made her even more determined to go.
Things packed, she took a bus to the airport. At the tickets counter, there was just a single passenger in the line, a three-handed alien woman, complaining about a mix-up in her booking.
‘What about if I allow you to travel to Prometheus free of charge?’ the agent suggested. He had a soothing voice, but Evelyn couldn’t see his face from behind the woman’s wild gesticulation.
‘Oh! Thank you so much, kind human. You truly are a gift from God.’
It was Evelyn’s turn, when her phone buzzed. She greeted the agent, but her gaze was focused on the phone screen. “Do not come back,” was all the message said. The words shot through her like a blizzard. Evelyn shivered and blinked the tears from her eyes.
“A Heart’s Desire” available on July 31.
Pre-order at iBooks Store, Kobo, Barnes&Noble.

Hello, my fellow bloggers!
I am very excited to announce…drumroll please… my very first self-published ebook!
‘A Heart’s Desire’ is a romance/fantasy short story with sci-fi elements. Available on July 31.
This is just something I’ve always wanted to try, something I can now cross off my bucket list… something a bit different from poetry, which is what this blog is mostly about.
I am beyond grateful for all the attention you’ve given to my blog, for all your likes and the words of encouragement and appreciation. I met amazing, talented people here, and it is a great honour for me to know you.
I hope you can find time to check it out. Your opinion matters to me immensely. You provide me with so much needed creative fuel and energy to keep going on. ‘A Heart’s Desire‘ is yet another example of that.
The picture above will take you to Smashwords, where you can read a free sample and, if you like it, you will be able to get a copy on July 31 upon its release. HH69W is your coupon code to get it for free.
I highly rely on your time and opinion. You could help me a lot by spreading the word to your family, friends and through your blogs to the wordpress-sphere.
‘A Heart’s Desire’ is also available in iBooks store as a pre-order
I only mention it because, to an aspiring writer, making even a tiny bit of profit is practically an unattainable dream. Yet again, you can get it for free on Smashwords.
Finally… if you made it to the end of this post, you’re my hero 🙂
Best wishes and lots of love,
Maira

Agnes, fanstasy, food, life, people, Scottish terrier, stranger, train, window seat
Agnes decided to take the train home. No reason. A swift decision that was made by her heart rather than her brain. Intuition vs common sense.
Somehow her seat could be booked in advance, even though the enormous clock occupying the whole of the station’s ceiling disagreed, indicating fifteen minutes to departure. Clock on the ceiling? How inconvenient. She had to pass through the flashmob of zombies to get on the train. Their heads tilted back, mouths open and drooling – every single one of them starring wistfully at the gigantic clock.
Agnes made her way through luggage, beer bellies, a raven Scottish terrier (Hey there, cutie) and a pair of twin toddlers. She had never imagined that finding a tag with her name on it would be so difficult. At last she noticed it attached to the back of the window seat, but the real treat was waiting next to it.
It was a large box of Ben’s cookies.
No, just kidding.
It was a man in a black suit. Agnes asked him to let her through to her seat. He stood up politely, clutching a paper bag close to his chest. The raven Scottish terrier ran to him, barked once and retreated.
Half an hour later, Agnes dared to take a glance at him. Dark hazel eyes, full symmetrical lips and high cheekbones. He had the most handsome face in the whole world. No surprise there.
He was constantly checking his phones. Yes, he had two phones. Agnes glanced again. He is playing Candy Crush. Level 495. Slowpoke.
He sighed heavily as if he read her mind, but it turned out it was his stop. She watched him leave. That suit fitted him perfectly. Just like that he was gone from her life and that was it for Agnes and him before it even started.
The train began moving, and Agnes realised that he forgot his paper bag. She took it and at the same time the Scottish terrier came back. It jumped on the seat that used to be occupied by Agnes’ fictive star-crossed lover.
‘Do you want to know what’s inside?’ Agnes asked the dog and it wagged its tale in agreement.
She opened the bag.
Yes.
There were Ben’s cookies inside. Finally!

Dear Lizzy,
I hope you are well. I am not completely sure that this letter will find you, but since you left for Hades, I don’t know how to reach you otherwise, and this also might be the safest way to contact you.
We miss you, Lizzy. Darren misses you.
Things are drastically changing here on Ares. The government calls it a virus. They lock people up, so we’re trying not to attract unnecessary attention. Love is not a virus, Lizzy. It’s a revelation. If only you stayed, you would’ve witnessed magic in the eyes of your son. Darren asks me about you everyday. How long do you want me to lie to him?
Who am I kidding? I am angry with you! I feel the heat flushing through my body when I think of how you left us. You are my older sister and I need you now more than ever, Lizzy. I need you to come back to Darren and give him the motherly love he yearns for, because, this new world, Lizzy, where love is ruling, it’s completely different from everything we’ve known before.
I remember feeling unfinished as if they forgot to install a vital piece into the machinery that is my body. I used to watch people from the porch; I suffered from insomnia and fatigue. I was lonely and didn’t even see it. Then that rebel came out of nowhere. They call her the skyey emancipator. You should’ve heard of her – I am sure that her influence reached as far to the corners of our system as Hades. Now I know the meaning of euphoria, racing pulse and a fluttering in the stomach, yet I still can’t risk showing my true feelings.
Darren goes to school everyday. He seems to be doing fine, but some of the kids continue to tease him because of his red hair. I tell him that his mother is the most beautiful redhead on the planet. He just laughs. I guess if Darren where a girl, he would appreciate this more.
On the serious note, I am a little scared for our future. The radio was disabled last night. The government’s spies are eavesdropping on phone and video calls. Life as we know it doesn’t exist anymore. Wherever the revolution leads the world, I strongly hope that at some point it would make us cross paths with you.
I wish for you to come back to your family, Lizzy.
Take care,
Faith

In a galaxy far away from ours there was another system of planets and their Sun – the utopian coalition, the Elysium of all paradises. Every planet, of which there were nine, was populated. People lived in peace and harmony, and all that was possible due to one single rule, followed irrevocably – never, under any circumstances, let yourself fall in love.
Love was the word that they banned from the mouths of little children. People got punished for even implying that such emotion could possibly exist and invade the hearts of the innocents, who, free from all the restrictions that came with love, ended up prosperous and successful.
Love to your parents was admissible. But they referred to it as “repaying the debt”. The two human beings, chosen at random, who signed a life-long contract, agreed to share their DNA to create another life by means of science. The child was to be raised in a laboratory until becoming of the appropriate age, so that the parents would not waste time on caring for him in the early stages of his development. Some, however, preferred not to meet their offspring. Sky was one of these kids.
‘Good morning.’
She took a deep, satisfied breath. Her body was regenerated from the desperate fall last night that didn’t leave a single bone of her skeleton unharmed. This reminded her of the time when she was born. Immediately, the conscious of an adult was seeing through the eyes of a child. She was alive, yet not entirely complete.
‘Good morning.’
‘Are you feeling alright?’
Sky was perfectly fine. She left the hospital ten minutes later and went straight to the airport.
Last night she tried to solve her problem. This time she determined to deal with it for good.
‘One ticket to Hades, please.’
‘To Hades?’ the saleslady raised her eyebrows. ‘You do realise it’s a one-way ticket?’
The girl with the red ponytail knew what she was doing. ‘Is that so?’ she sounded genuinely surprised, at which Sky thought that this kind of behavior was not common for the Aresians. Perhaps, the girl was visiting from Hermes.
Sky had noticed her at the parking lot earlier. She was walking with wide steps; shoulders back and chin high. There was no way she didn’t know about Hades’ recent elimination from the coalition.
‘It is certainly so! Are you sure you want to travel there? I’ve heard that they’ll be shutting down the airport in the next three days.’
‘I am sure.’
‘Very well.’
Sky bought a ticket from a different saleslady. Neither of them was keen to keep up with the conversation, even out of politeness. She had already taken the sleeping pill, which left her twenty minutes to get onboard of the Aresians space-lines to the Third planet.
The entire flight she was dreaming about him.
It was half past twelve when the spacecraft landed. Sky was greeted with the smell of fresh wind and a song of the bluebirds. She suddenly realised that she had no idea where to find him.
Sky walked to the exit doors with a racing heartbeat. She believed it to be the internal response of the body to the level of recklessness and desperation running through her veins.
Then the doors opened and she saw him.
The chain reaction that followed Sky’s act wiped out the life on seven planets. Years later, when the order was restored every schoolchild on the Third planet knew how and when this happened. Sky knew that she was the destroyer, but they called her the emancipator. The skyey emancipator who showed them what love was.
Now she was complete.

Once upon a time there lived a person, who never told anyone his real name. Some used to call him Mr. Jones, so let us stick with this name for the sake of the story.
Mr. Jones, apart from his off-scale arrogance, happened to be an extremely agreeable young man, who stole more than one brittle woman’s heart. He enjoyed his daily rendezvous, and always got away with them. He was very good at his job: master of avoiding questions, never using the same name twice with the women. Only his close pals knew who he really was.
Mr. Jones – a modern heartthrob, a twenty-first century Don Juan. He had many faces, but one face for them all, for poor women. They didn’t stand a chance.
It happened on a Wednesday.
He took the bus to work on that day instead of taxi, because he lost his wallet the previous night. Having no time to worry about that, he hurried back to his dull desk. Just like anti-Clark Kent, he became an ordinary office rat during the light hours.
Behind his round glasses, pretending to be typing, he was carefully scanning the room for his new victim.
‘What the hell?’ he heard himself yelling.
‘I’m so sorry! No need to worry, I will get it myself.’
He looked up and saw a young woman, the one he had never seen before, or at least her fine red ponytail, leaning over him to get the pen she accidently dropped on him. It rolled behind the keyboard, but she just did not see it.
‘Here,’ he said, handing her the stupid thing.
‘Thanks. This is my first day, I didn’t mean to disturb you, Mr.–‘
‘Jones. Mr. Jones. And you are?’
But she was already gone.
And Mr. Jones, for the first time in his disgusting life, fell in love. Just like that, from the first sight of the red ponytail of the woman who didn’t even tell him her name.
The rest of the week he spent drinking and clubbing. He couldn’t believe what was happening to him – his heart was eating his brain. He called in sick and asked for a non-paid leave for a couple of days. By the end of Sunday, the brain had been digested by ninety-six percent. So Mr. Jones decided to get back to work the next day and find the girl.
They ran into each other in the hallway. She claimed she didn’t recognise him.
‘I am not very good with faces,’ she lied.
‘Neither am I, but I remembered your ponytail.’
‘Too bad that’s all you will ever remember of me.’
Before Mr. Jones could do anything, even though he probably couldn’t without the help of his brain, the girl ripped his heart right out of his chest, put it in her purse and took the first taxi to the airport.
Never take the bus on Wednesday, was Mr. Jones’ last shadow of a thought.
